What are some tips for winterizing my home?

Seal cracks: Perhaps the biggest problem that occurs during the winter is that you start to realize that cold air might be coming into your home. In order to prevent this, especially when it leads to having to turn your heat up, you should be walking around your home and caulking the different holes and openings that you find. We also recommend installing weather stripping and seals around windows and doors. However, for windows that are still too drafty, we might recommend just replacing them with new ones.
Test your detectors: When it comes to winter, residential fires are much more common. We recommend checking your smoke detectors monthly, and if they require it, replacing the batteries. We also highly suggest installing a carbon monoxide detector, since they are good at tracking if any toxic gas is being trapped inside of your home. It’s important to stay safe, and avoid fires and toxic gas at all costs.
Clear yard: For anyone with large trees surrounding their home, now is an important time of year. You should be getting your trees trimmed to avoid any limbs falling onto your home, and causing damage that is expensive. There is even the risk of injury, should a tree branch fall on someone in your home. There are many tree-trimming experts that you can call to get this done.
Check your gutters: Ice dams can be a major issue if you have gutters that have not been cleared. No one wants to have to replace their roof if it was previously fine, but if you have gutters, get gutter guards installed. Along with this, make sure that your attic is insulated, which can further help to melt any ice that might form.
Protect the pipes: Pipes bursting is probably one of the worst things that can happen during the colder months. We recommend insulating pipes that could be susceptible to freezing, and even letting some streams of water run on particularly cold nights to further prevent a pipe from bursting.
