What maintenance should I perform on my home for fall?
Gutters and Downspouts: Perhaps the most important thing with gutters and downspouts is to clean them out thoroughly throughout fall. You do not want to have a build-up of leaves or any other debris that could get in. If your gutters are neglected, that can lead to pest infestations, and wood rot. You also need to make sure that water is not coming down behind the gutters, and that the water is draining and not pooling.
Windows and doors: The very first thing that most people will want to do is change out summer screens for weather storms windows and doors. You will also want to repair or replace any damaged windows, or doors, along with their frames. Another thing that could potentially help is to install weather stripping, or caulking, to help to prevent drafts. This lowers your heating bills.
Heating systems: When it comes to the cold, the heating system is probably the most important part of your home. That is why you’ll want to replace the filter in your furnace, and even clean your ducts to make sure that you are reducing household dust. We also highly recommend having a professional check your heating system to make sure that it is performing how it should, and they can even diagnose any minor problems that come up.
Plumbing: Pipes can be very susceptible and vulnerable when it comes to cold weather. You will want to ensure that any pipes that might be in trouble are properly insulated to prevent them from freezing or bursting. You should also be aware of where your water shut-off valve is, on the rare and horrible occasion that your pipes do ever freeze.
Landscaping: This might not be your first thought, but if you have trees that are fairly close to your home, you will want them to be trimmed. There is nothing more dangerous, especially in the event of heavy snow or ice than the idea of a tree branch landing on your home.
